Radar Technician for ARM Southern Great Plains site

Applications are being solicited for a radar technician to support the U.S. Department of Energy ARM Climate Research Facility Southern Great Plains (SGP) site. The SGP site is the first and largest of the ARM sites, featuring a heavily instrumented Central Facility near Lamont, Oklahoma, and other instrument clusters located throughout its domain. Included in this instrument suite are soon-to-be-deployed scanning X-bands, a scanning C-band and a dual-frequency (W/K band) scanning cloud radar. Other radars include a zenith pointing Ka-band radar and several 915-MHz wind profiling radars. Periodic travel to support similar radars at the ARM North Slope of Alaska site in Barrow, Alaska, will also be required.

Applicant qualifications should include ability to test, diagnose, and repair complex radar systems including receivers, transmitters, and positioners; knowledge of radio frequency systems, especially high-power transmitters; expertise in using relevant electronic test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, power meters, signal generators, oscilliscopes, etc.; functional knowledge of Windows and Linux; and ability to read and understand complex technical documentation. Applicants should have excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to respond to non-routine situations in the field, and the ability to supervise and train technicians who don’t have radar experience or training.

Physical requirements include the ability to lift 40 lbs, climb a 20-ft ladder, and work in confined spaces. The minimum required education is an associates degree in electronics. Relevant military training and additional non-military experience can replace this. A minimum of five years of directly related experience is required.
