Senior Scientist Needed for Radiation Modeling Research at ECMWF

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), an international weather forecasting and scientific research organization, has an opening for a senior scientist at their ECMWF Headquarters in Shinfield Park, near Reading, United Kingdom. This position will conduct research with the aim of improving the stability, accuracy and efficiency of the ECMWF model, specifically on better representation of processes associated with radiation, turbulent mixing, subgrid-scale orographic drag, moist convection, clouds, and surface processes. Work will be in the following areas:

  • New radiative transfer solvers and methods to enhance the computational efficiency and scalability of the model
  • Representation of the radiative effects of subgrid-scale variability of clouds and the Earth’s surface
  • Representation of the optical properties of clouds, aerosols, and trace gases
  • Formulation of the radiation model error.

In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to work in strong collaboration with other scientists in the Physical Aspects Section, other groups at ECMWF, including the Numerical Aspects, Chemical Aspects, Data Assimilation and Probabilistic Forecasting Sections, and with the team working on the Monitoring of Atmospheric Composition and Climate (MACC-II) project. Interested applicants must apply no later than 30 September 2013.

For more information and how to apply, see the full job announcement, reference number VN13-16, on the ECMWF web page.
