The UEC is eager to engage with you. This is a quarterly message from the UEC Chair.

As the chair of the UEC, I feel privileged to be one of the voices of the ARM and Atmospheric System Research (ASR) community. As an instrument mentor, I feel lucky to be writing this newsletter on my way to the North Slope of Alaska.
2019 ARM/ASR Joint Meeting
Already two months have passed since the 2019 Joint ARM User Facility/ASR Principal Investigators Meeting was held in Rockville, Maryland.
During the meeting, the UEC organized a networking lunch for new members of the ARM/ASR community. The networking lunch was very well attended (more than 50 participants) and included a large cohort of early career scientists. Conversations around new research topics, the ARM Data Center and Data Discovery tool, instrument mentors, and career development were fostered by UEC members. These informal conversations seem to be the best vehicle to gather feedback from the user community, compared to a poorly attended UEC poster presentation during the poster sessions.
As the UEC Chair, I also participated in a panel discussion organized by Shaocheng Xie centered around the critical question: “How ARM Meets the Needs of ASR Science Goals.” Data quality and uncertainty quantification tutorials to educate new users were on the list of topics discussed. Both are on the UEC to-do list for the coming year!
AGU and AMS Meetings on the Horizon
The American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting (December 9 to 13, 2019) is back in San Francisco, California, this year. The American Meteorological Society (AMS) 100th meeting (January 12 to 16, 2020) will be held in Boston, Massachusetts. Deadlines for abstract submission for both meetings were fast upon us—and passed.
In my last message, I mentioned that Jim Mather, Giri Prakash, William Gustafson, Christine Chiu, and I had proposed a half-day ARM workshop at AGU that aimed to engage the scientific community and promote ARM. Our proposed workshop was not selected this year, but we will try again next year, after digesting the reviews from the organizing committee.
Remember that the UEC is the official voice of the ARM user community and we want to represent you. You can reach me here and learn about members of the UEC here. We all look forward to hearing from you!
